Selection Criteria

The next Great Michigan Read title should:

  • Prompt exploration of humanities content that can help Michigan’s citizens understand and learn more about their state, their history, and
    their society.
  • Take place—at least in part—in Michigan.
  • Relate to contemporary life and spark dialogue about exchanging stories and fostering understanding through gathering.
  • Contain themes which allow for the creation of dynamic, engaging public programming.
  • Interest and engage a statewide audience, from high school students to seniors.
  • Encourage a range of perspectives and highlight interdisciplinary connections.
  • Be of reasonable length.
  • Remain in print and be accessible as an audiobook and/or ebook.
  • Be written by a living author.
  • Have been first published between 2021 and 2026. This criterion is preferred, not required.
