Additional Grant Requirements
Michigan Humanities is funded, in part, by federal dollars that are allocated to the state of Michigan by the National Endowment for the Humanities. This funding is then re-granted to Michigan nonprofits doing work in the name of the humanities. Federal reporting requirements are put in place to assure that tax dollars are being invested and spent responsibly. Federal registration and reporting requirements are effective for all organizations that receive federal funds.
The one major change that will impact nonprofits that receive funding from the Michigan Humanities is all organizations that wish to apply for a “Humanities Grant” or an “Action Grant” have to be registered in the System for Award Management (SAM). This registration process is lengthy and will require some advanced preparation. We are encouraging organizations to begin this process now as approval through the SAM system is taking two to three weeks, and approval is required before an application for funding can be REVIEWED.
We have compiled a resource sheet that will offer some quick tips and links to resources to help you through this online registration process. This registration process will involve several members of the organization’s staff including the Director, President/CEO, or top Executive. It will be very helpful for organizations to assemble the needed information prior to beginning the application entry process.
To sign up for a SAM account visit www.SAM.gov. There is NO fee to register for the account. The organization’s DUNS number and SAM account must be renewed each year. It is a good idea to add these renewal reminders to your calendar so not to miss future funding opportunities due to expired registrations.
