2025-2026 Great Michigan Read
Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant by Curtis Chen
This novel follows Curtis, an American-born Chinese gay man coming of age in 1970s and 1980s Detroit, as he navigates the complexities of identity, family expectations, and societal prejudice. Set against the backdrop of historical events like the Detroit Race Riots and the murder of Vincent Chin, the story explores racism, class struggles, and the challenges of being LGBTQ+ in a conservative community. Through Curtis’s experiences at the University of Michigan and in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, the book examines economic shifts, crime, and cultural evolution while highlighting the resilience of marginalized communities. Ultimately, it is a deeply personal and socially relevant narrative about self-discovery, activism, and the power of storytelling.
