DESCRIPTION:Dig into a fascinating piece of our Detroit Historical Museum exhibit\, “In the Neighborhood!”  In 1907 Louis Schlussel opened a bathhouse at the corner of Alfred and St. Antoine streets\, featuring Detroit’s first documented mikveh (Jewish ritual bath).  Come learn about the 2019 archaeological dig that recovered bathhouse artifacts. DESCRIPTION:Emotions at Play with Pixar’s Inside Out on display at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum from June 1 through September 8\, 2024 \nEmotions at Play with Pixar’s Inside Out\, the first interactive exhibit based on the award-winning film\, helps visitors – young and old – understand the important role emotions\, memory and imagination play in our everyday lives. Focusing on the five core emotions featured in Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out – Joy\, Sadness\, Anger\, Disgust and Fear – hands-on and digital experiences in the exhibit offer opportunities to explore some of the ways we express our emotions – and recognize emotions in others\, too. \n\nStep into Headquarters to explore the range and intensity of emotions at the Control Panel.\nExplore some of the ways we show how we feel with our faces and bodies at the Emotions Mirrors.\nThink about an important memory and how it made you feel – or show how you are feeling right now by creating a glowing Memory Sphere.\nUse your imagination to create a story and perform it at Dream Productions.\nWork to keep the train on track – what feelings do you have when you control and balance the Train of Thought.\nExplore how emotions work together as you stack and balance the Emotion Blocks.\nThe exhibition was developed by Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios.\n\nThis exhibit has bilingual (English/Spanish) signage. \n\nThe Grand Rapids Children’s Museum is open to the public on Tuesdays\, Friday\, and Saturdays from 9am-4pm\, Thursday from 9am-7pm\, and Sunday from noon-4pm. Regular admission is $12.00 per person and $11.00 for ages 65+. Admission for teachers\, healthcare workers\, and active military members is $10.00. Through Museums for All\, admission for EBT and WIC cardholders is $1.75 per person for up to 12 people per card. DESCRIPTION:Black Bottom was a thriving Black neighborhood when it was torn down to create a freeway in the name of “urban renewal.”  Sixty years later\, I-375 is slated to become grade level\, presenting an opportunity for thirty-one acres of new development where Black Bottom once stood.  What will that new development look like\, who will benefit\, can we repair past harms\, and who decides and how? SUMMARY:Measure for Measure
DESCRIPTION:Measure for Measure was founded in 1988 by five alumni of the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club\, to provide an opportunity for men to perform music composed and arranged for male chorus. Under the leadership of its founding conductor\, Dr. Leonard L. Riccinto\, Measure for Measure debuted with seventeen singers in April 1989. \nMeasure for Measure has appeared at conventions of the American Choral Directors Association\, Michigan School Vocal Music Association\, Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses\, Inc\, and the International Male Choral Symposium. Measure for Measure collaborates annually with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra\, and has also enjoyed performances with the Detroit\, Flint\, Oakland\, Plymouth\, Rochester\, and Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestras. Measure for Measure has toured throughout the United States\, Canada\, and Europe\, and collaborated with acclaimed soloists including George Shirley\, Ara Berberian\, Glenda Kirkland\, and Jennifer Larson. \nThe men of Measure for Measure embrace the belief that singing is for a lifetime\, and every season hold concerts that encourage young men to continue singing. Measure for Measure’s efforts to promote male choral singing have led to collaborations with the men’s choruses from the University of Michigan\, Michigan State University\, Azusa Pacific University\, Ball State University\, Bowling Green State University\, Grand Valley State University\, Miami University (OH)\, and Ohio University\, among others. \nMeasure for Measure has performed several benefit concerts for charitable organizations including Dawn Farm\, Hope Clinic\, United Way\, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital – Pontiac\, Mott’s Children’s Hospital\, Save-A-Heart Foundation\, Saline Area Social Services\, Eastern Michigan University music department scholarships\, Branch United Youth Choir\, and a project sponsored by the Livingston Arts Council to restore the Howell Opera House. \nFunding for this program was provided by Michigan Humanities –Arts and Humanities Touring Grant. SUMMARY:Origin Stories Exhibit Opening and Kick-Off
DESCRIPTION:“Origin Stories” is a collection of 50 recorded oral histories detailing the arrival of Lansing residents from across the globe. Selections as broad as a Vietnamese boat person\, the son of a Ukrainian shepherd\, a family who made their way via the Erie Canal; a young couple from Alabama who were part of the Great Migration\, a family member who survived the Indian Boarding School and other individuals who were part of the refugee resettlement. Many came fleeing war\, famine\, religious oppression\, and many others saw opportunities not available to them in their original countries. Immigrants made their way from Ireland\, France\, Canada\, Scotland\, and scores of other countries. The Exhibit will profile these individual origin stories through video storytelling and traditional exhibits of artifacts. \nFunding for the Great Michigan Stories program is provided by Michigan Humanities.
