Directory of Humanities Professionals

The Michigan Humanities Council presents its Directory of Humanities Professionals in an effort to match qualified professionals and scholars with participation in public humanities programs as discussion leaders, writers, consultants, evaluators, facilitators, lecturers, panelists, planners, presenters, researchers and speakers. All professionals listed in the directory are required to be Michigan residents.

A listing in the Directory of Humanities Professionals is not an endorsement by the Michigan Humanities Council, nor is the Michigan Humanities Council responsible for the content of any presentations contracted through the use of the Directory.

Apply to be a Humanities Professional

If you have a master’s or doctorate degree with expertise in a humanities topic or field, and would like to serve as a scholar, consultant or guest speaker for various events and projects around Michigan, you can complete the online application to be listed in the directory.

Michigan Humanities Council guidelines define a qualified humanities professional as someone who has at least a master’s degree or equivalent in a humanities-related discipline (history, literature, anthropology, philosophy, ethics, comparative religion, etc.). Although professionals are often affiliated with colleges and universities, it is not a requirement. Persons who use interdisciplinary approaches involving the humanities, such as librarians, museum curators, and archivists may also be considered humanities professionals. The definition may also include people who may not be professionals with degrees, but who nevertheless possess extensive backgrounds in the humanities, such as traditional culture practitioners.
