Parkour: The Art of Displacement (mp3)

Description
If you think park benches are just for sitting and walls are something you walk around…then you probably haven’t experienced parkour (par-CORE). It’s a kind of extreme martial art form that originated in France. Parkour is still relatively unknown in the states, though it did make an appearance in the latest James Bond movie. Michigan Radio’s Jennifer Guerra spent some time with a local parkour club and has this story.

Homegrown Fiddlers: Fiddling for Fun (mp3)

Description
Hooten’, hollering, dancing and laughing…probably not your typical description of a string music concert. That is unless the string music in question is fiddle music. A group called the Saline Fiddlers is on a mission to turn string music into a high energy, explosive sound. Michigan Radio’s Jennifer Guerra dropped by for a fiddle practice and has this story.

Anthony Brancaleone (BRANK lee own) is one of the guys behind a new, independent documentary called A Detroit Thing. The movie looks at the struggles Detroit musicians go through to make it big and what happens when they don’t. Jennifer Guerra spoke with Brancaleone about what it takes to make it as a musician in Michigan and as a filmmaker.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra announced its new fall season today. The schedule features four world premieres, several works by American composers, and many guest artists. Our Shifting Vowels: The Way We Talk Changes (mp3)

In Michigan -- the way we pronounce some of our vowels is shifting. Something called the "Northern Cities Vowel Shift" is taking over the way we talk. It's a way of pronouncing words that didn't exist 75 years ago. Now it's spreading from Michigan's cities out to the countryside. As Linda Stephan reports, if you don't have this new dialect -- your daughter likely will.

Even if you haven't had a chance to visit Detroit personally...you can still get a taste for what life there is like. There have been countless books and films set in Detroit. Detroit Rock City, 8 Mile, Middlesex, and any number of Elmore Leonard books, to name a few. But what about the cities just south of Detroit? Cities like Riverview and Taylor and Gross Ile. Author Jeanne Leiby set out to give those cities their literary due with a collection of stories called Downriver. The Electric Kalimba: Kalimba Audio Postcard (mp3)

Description
The kalimba is an ancient African instrument made out of wood and tiny metal tines that you pluck with your thumbs. Two Detroit musicians have updated the instrument for the 21st century. Over one-hundred of their hand-crafted kalimbas are on display at the U-F-O Factory in Detroit. Michigan Radio's Jennifer Guerra visited the gallery...and sent back this audio postcard

Hemingway's Michigan: Great Michigan Read (mp3)

Description
People don't read a whole lot of literature anymore. That's according to a recent study by the National Endowment for the Arts. In an effort to buck the trend, the Michigan Humanities Council came up with the idea to turn the state into one giant book club where everyone reads the same book at the same time. The book that was chosen for the first ever Great Michigan Read is The Nick Adams Stories by Ernest Hemingway. Michigan Radio's Jennifer Guerra has more.
