| Past
experience: Additional forays that broadened my general appreciation of cultures' critical functioning in the development of social status included attempting to understand Hawaiian Asian immigrant perspectives on attaining United States legal status and working with natives in Amealco, Mexico rebuilding schools, working side-byside-at everyday chores, and teaching. what can come of this experience if it is not put to use? Most recently since graduation, I have used my knowledge to assist the Americorps State Program (ASP) in tutoring intermediate grade "at-risk" students in an impoverished Northern Michigan community. In my capacity, I was, of course able to help some of the children with whom I worked. but, I am understanding now that I was the student; learning first hand that cultural characteristics are at the root of ensuring welfare inequalilties even in the richest nation. My growth continues. While my current work through the ASP and American Red Cross allows me to help those in their disaster recovery process, I have taken my deep and growing concern for societal influences on pandemic disease states to (for me) a new level. though small in scope, my development of, and getting funding for the Hear Me Campaign will empower high school students to prevent, via awareness, the spread of HIV/AIDS: locally and internationally. In essence, local actions can and will translate into direct support of HIV/AIDS victims in Zambia through funding of the International Foundation of the Red Crescent/Red Cross. |

| Suggestions
for public humanities projects: I would like to see more development in programming that focus' on educating the youth about the HIV/AIDS pandemic both internationally and nationally. |
