Host Sites Announced for Making Sense
of the American Civil War

The Michigan Humanities Council is pleased to announce the names of the Michigan organizations selected to host the 2012-13 discussion program Making Sense of the American Civil War.

Making Sense is a five-part scholar-led reading and discussion series that will focus on perspectives of the American Civil War and the varying experiences of individuals from different genders, ethnicities and backgrounds during that time period. The selected host institutions that will host discussion between November 2012 and April 2013 are:

American Civil WarThanks to the National Endowment for the Humanities and American Library Association, MHC will be able to provide 25 copies of three different books, as well as an introductory essay, promotional and support materials, reading lists, and discussion outlines to the accepted host institutions.

The three books that will be provided are: March by Geraldine Brooks; Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam by James McPherson; and America’s War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversaries, a new anthology edited by Edward L. Ayers and published by the NEH and ALA.
