The Michigan Humanities Council has received a grant of $85,000 from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA). Sixty-five thousand dollars of the grant will go toward the Arts & Humanities Touring program administration and adjudication costs, as well as grants. The remainder of the grant, $20,000, will help fund administrative and program costs for Poetry Out Loud.

Teachers take note: the National Endowment for the Humanities is offering workshops for school teachers on Landmarks of American History and Culture. Forty teachers will be selected for a weeklong no-cost workshop exploring Abraham Lincoln’s life, politics and historical challenges. Applications must be postmarked by March 1. On the PBS website, readers could get a glimpse of 12 small-town documentary film festivals to be held in 2012. The list included the Traverse City Film Festival, which is recognized for its popularity over the past eight years. The Traverse City Film Festival will be held
July 31 to Aug. 5.

Michigan Notable Books, produced by the Library of Michigan with help from a $15,000 Michigan Humanities Council major grant, has announced its list for 2012. The list includes 20 books published in the past year that feature people, places, events or authors related to Michigan or the Great Lakes region. Bobbie Arnold, a Michigan Humanities Council board member, has been elected to the board of the Council of Michigan Foundations. Arnold will serve a three-year term, as detailed here in the Midland Daily News.
