Civil War Discussion Program
Ready to Launch

Making Sense of the Civil WarWe are pleased to announce that a new reading and discussion program, Making Sense of the American Civil War, will be available this fall and winter for libraries and historical societies. This five-part scholar-led reading and discussion series will focus on perspectives of the American Civil War and the varying experiences of individuals from different genders, ethnicities and backgrounds during that time period.

Thanks to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA), the Michigan Humanities Council will be able to provide 25 copies of three different books, as well as an introductory essay, promotional and support materials, reading lists, and discussion outlines to accepted host institutions. The three books that will be provided include: March by Geraldine Brooks; Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam, by James McPherson; and America’s War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversaries, a new anthology edited by Edward L. Ayers and published by the NEH and ALA.

The Michigan Humanities Council is coordinating this discussion and reading series in Michigan and seeks four non-profit organizations to host Making Sense of the American Civil War in Fall 2012 and Winter 2013. An application to bring this stimulating and informative reading and discussion series to your library or historical society is now available. Please contact Audrey Dowell at (517) 372-7770 or adowell@mihumanities.org for more information.  The application deadline is September 7.
