14, 2007 UPPCO Awards Michigan Humanities Council $5,000 for The Great Michigan Read (LANSING)----The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) announces it is the recipient of $5,000 from the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) through a grant from the Wisconsin Public Service Foundation in support of The Great Michigan Read. The Great Michigan Read seeks to increase the reading of literature by focusing on The Nick Adams Stories by Ernest Hemingway. The Nick Adams Stories is a coming of age tale inspired by the author’s boyhood experiences in Northern Michigan. Funds will be earmarked for cultural organizations and libraries located in the Upper Peninsula that are implementing the program. “The Michigan Humanities Council appreciates the financial support from the Upper Peninsula Power Company to help fund Great Michigan Read programs in the U.P.,” said Janice Fedewa, executive director of the Michigan Humanities Council. “We are pleased that thousands of individuals will be reading a masterpiece made in Michigan.” Currently, 14 organizations in the Upper Peninsula are among the more than 100 organizations participating across the state. The organizations are: Bayliss Public Library (Sault Ste. Marie), Calumet Public School Library, Chippewa County Historical Society (Sault Ste. Marie), Dickinson County Library (Iron Mountain), Engadine Library, Escanaba Public Library, Gladstone School and Public Library, Ironwood Carnegie Library, Marquette Senior High School, Munising School Public Library, Ontonagon Township Library, Peter White Public Library (Marquette), St. Ignace Public Library, Tahquamenon Area School Public Library (Newberry), Additional information is available at www.greatmichiganread.org or by contacting the MHC at 517-372-7770.
