The Great Michigan Read exhibit at Michigan Union; 826michigan presentations at Ann Arbor Book Festival - Opening Reception May 9
The exhibit, Up North with the Hemingways, will be on public display at the Art Lounge on
the First Floor of the Michigan Union in Ann Arbor from May 9 through May 26, 2008. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, May 9, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. At the reception, students of 826michigan will also discuss their own works inspired by Hemingway. And, the Michigan Humanities
Council will present limited copies of The Great Michigan Read poster to the Ann Arbor Book Festival
and to 826michigan, autographed by the artists who designed them.
The Great Michigan Read exhibit in Big Rapids
The exhibit, Up North with the Hemingways, is on public display at the Artworks in Big Rapids through May 12. The exhibit is open Tuesdays through Fridays, from 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am - 4 pm.

Charles White Advances to Poetry Out Loud National Finals
Michigan's 2008 Poetry Out Loud winner, Charles White (Forest Hills Central High School, Grand Rapids) successfully advanced as one of 12 finalists in the national Poetry Out Loud competition. Charles did not win the championship, which concluded on April 29. The winner represented the U.S. Virgin Islands. Charles advanced to the championship round as one of four finalists from the Midwest Region; there are three geographic regions, and four from each region advanced to the national finals. A total of 52 students competed: one from every state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Judges evaluate each student performance on criteria including physical presence, articulation, evidence of understanding, level of difficulty, and accuracy. Students choose three poems to recite from the Poetry Out Loud print and online anthologies (www.poetryoutloud.org). The championship round will be held at 7:00 p.m. on April 29, 2008, at the George Washington University Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC.

Valerie Hemingway Six Stop Michigan Tour
Valerie Hemingway, author of Running with the Bulls, a memoir of her years as Ernest Hemingway’s secretary and her later marriage to his son, Gregory Hemingway, will tour six cities in Michigan from April 23-29, 2008 (Lansing, Hamtramck, Grand Rapids, Marquette, Traverse City, Saginaw). The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) brings Valerie Hemingway to Michigan to celebrate The Great Michigan Read, a statewide literature reading program featuring Ernest Hemingway’s The Nick Adams Stories.
Valerie Hemingway Opens To Capacity Crowd in Lansing
Valerie Hemingway kicked off her Michigan Tour with a full crowd at the Michigan Library and Historical Center in Lansing on April 23. In addition, the Michigan Humanities Council presented a unique, limited edition framed poster of The Great Michigan Read artwork to Nancy Robertson, the State Librarian.

$49,772 Awarded for Arts & Humanities Touring Programs
The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) recently awarded $49,772 in Arts and Humanities Touring Program grants to Michigan organizations to support 142 artistic and cultural presentations in 28 counties between April 1 and September 30, 2008. The touring program, funded in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, consists of a wide variety of cultural programs from school assembly musical performances to library storytellers.

On April 2, the MHC presented the Clinton-Macomb Public Library with a unique, limited edition, framed poster of The Great Michigan Read to recognize the library for its outstanding TGMR programming.

The exhibit, Up North with the Hemingways, is on public display at the Plymouth Community Arts Council in Plymouth now through April 14, 2008.
Steelcase Foundation Awards $10,000; Frey Foundation Awards $5,000 for The Great Michigan Read
The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) is the recipient of $15,000 to support The Great Michigan Read. The Steelcase Foundation awarded the MHC $10,000 and the Frey Foundation awarded the MHC $5,000. Both foundations are based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The funds will be used for The Great Michigan Read collaborating organizations and events located in Western Michigan.

"Bijou
Orchestra" Video Short Named Best Video
The Michigan Association of Broadcasters named the "Bijou Orchestra" video (click here for video clip)as the 2007 Best video for Cultural and Performing Arts in the Public Television Category. The "Bijou Orchestra" video is one of many in Matrix: Michigan Arts & Humanities video project The criteria included: "A single program or series featuring cultural and performing arts. May include no more than three excerpts from a series. Criteria: subject portrayal, creative writing, entertainment value, effective use of audio, video and editing medium." The award was presented on March 12, 2008. Previous awards of videos produced as part of the project include: "Shipwreck Museum & Shadow Towns" (2006 Merit award for Mini-Documentary or Series), "Howell Opera House" (2006 Best Feature/Use of Medium), "Matrix: Michigan Arts & Humanities" (2005 Merit award for Cultural and Performing Arts).
The Great Michigan Read events in Grand Haven and along the Lake Michigan shore
On March 12, the MHC presented a limited edition poster to the Loutit District Library (Grand Haven) and the Spring Lake District Library to help celebrate The Great Michigan Read. The event included a presentation by Brian Gordon Sinclair as Ernest Hemingway. Furture events include: a March 13 presentation about Hemingway by songwriter Bill Jamerson at the Howard Miller Library in Zeeland; on March 13, Brian Gordon Sinclair portraying Hemingway at the Howmet Playhouse in Whitehall; on March 18, a discussion of Hemingway's family life in Michigan and Illinois at the Spring Lake District Library; on April 29, writer Spencer Ketchum sharing his relationship with the Hemingways at the Hackley District Library in Muskegon... and more:

Charles White Of Forest Hills Central High School
(Grand Rapids) Wins Poetry Out Loud State Championship
Charles White of Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids won the 2008 Poetry Out Loud state championship hosted today in Lansing by the Michigan Humanities Council. White bested 13 other contestants from across Michigan to win the title. He will receive a $200 cash award and an all-expenses paid trip to the national finals in Washington D.C. from April 28-29, 2008. Forest Hills Central High School will also receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. Brian Weber of Dansville High School was named the runner-up in the competition. He will receive $100, along with $200 for the Dansville High School library. The competition was held at the Michigan Historical Center in Lansing.
The Great Michigan Read exhibit in Plainwell, March 7 - 24
The exhibit, Up North with the Hemingways, will be on public display at the Charles Ransom District Library in Plainwell (180 S. Sherwood Ave., Plainwell) from March 7 through March 24, 2008. The exhibit is part of The Great Michigan Read.
Celebrate March is Reading Month with an insert of Hemingway's "Big Two-Hearted River" in the March 3, 2008, Detroit Free Press
The Detroit Free Press will include an exclusive, complete reprint of Ernest Hemingways' "Big Two-Hearted River" in its March 3, 2008 edition. The edition is being printed to help celebrate The Great Michigan Read and March is Reading Month.

GVSU Awarded $15,000 For Film on Muskegon's Up from the Bottoms
The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) awarded a grant of
$15,000 to Grand Valley State University for the project, Up from the Bottoms: African-
American Migration to Muskegon, Michigan. The award was part of the MHC’s Michigan
People, Michigan Places … Our Stories, Our Lives program, which supports community
collaboration for public humanities programs.

Roethke 100th Birthday Event Includes $14,928 Award for Oral History Project
The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) was joined by the Friends of Theordore Roethke Foundation (FTRF) in Saginaw to announce the project, Historic Perspectives of Roethke’s Saginaw: From Interview to Art. The presentation was at the Roethke House in Saginaw as part of a German Open House which included: live music; comments from Poet’s House, a 50,000-volume poet library and literary center in New York City; and, a public presentation about Roethke’s German heritage. The event also recognized the MHC for awarding $14,928 to the FTRF for the project.
Humanities council awarded $60,000 for PRIME TIME reading program in Detroit, Saginaw, and South Haven
The MHC received a $60,000 award to implement the PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME ® program at four Michigan libraries: Butman-Fish Branch, Saginaw; Campbell Branch Library, Detroit; Hoyt Public Library, Saginaw; and, South Haven Memorial Library, South Haven. It models and encourages family reading and discussion of humanities topics, and aids parents and children in selecting books and becoming active public library users. Each library chosen will implement PRIME TIME programs between February and November of 2008.
