Michigan Humanities Council offers three main grants programs:

The Council invites you to take a look at some of the projects awarded by Council grants in our Grants Archive.

A funding priority is for The Great Michigan Read program. The Michigan Humanities Council encourages proposals that expose new audiences to literature. Two grant categories are available for The Great Michigan Read: major grants of up to $7,500, and quick grants of up to $500. The same application is used for Michigan People, Michigan Places. Our Stories, Our Lives grants.

Michigan People, Michigan Places. Our Stories, Our Lives Grants

The Michigan Humanities Council grants emphasize collaboration among cultural, educational, and community-based organizations and institutions to serve Michigan's people with public humanities programming. These grants play a vital role in defining our culture, our state, our community, and ourselves. Organizations are encouraged to explore and retrace our: histories, roles in societies, advancements and changes, meaning in self-expression and fulfillment, commonalities and differences—what shapes us individually as well as communally.

Quick/Planning Grants

Michigan Humanities Council often receives requests from organizations seeking support for public humanities programs that fall outside the design and deadline schedules of the Council's regular grants. To help meet these requests and to match humanities resources and professionals with local needs, the Council offers Quick Grants, which can provide up to $500 to Michigan-based, nonprofit organizations for public humanities prorgrams or services such as:

• Planning (up to $1,000): covering honoraria and/or travel expenses for humanities professionals participating as consultants for public humanities programs;
• The Great Michigan Read: program expenses, such as the cost of books, printing, promotion, video/audio taping, honoraria and/or travel expenses for humanities professionals leading a book discussion group or speaking on The Great Michigan Read.
• Guest Speakers: covering honoraria and/or travel expenses for humanities professionals participating in film/video/exhibit events, conferences, lectures;
• Reading Discussion Programs: covering honoraria and/or travel expenses for humanities professionals leading book discussion groups at libraries or community centers;
• Other Event Expenses such as printing, promotion, video/audio taping, exhibit rental, etc., related to a specific program. Activities falling in this category must be clearly centered in the humanities, involving humanities scholars in consulting, creation, or execution, and be directed at a public audience.

NOTE: Programs and presenters already supported through the Council's Arts & Humanities Touring Program are not eligible for Quick Grant support.

Michigan's Arts & Humanities Touring Program Grants

Arts and Humanities Touring Program grants funds to Michigan nonprofit sponsors to help cover the fees and expenses of the touring presenters and artists listed in the Michigan Arts and Humanities Touring Directory. Touring Program funds from Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs are administered by Michigan Humanities Council under a public-private partnership between the councils.

Grant Publicity Requirements

The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) requires each grant recipient include mention of the MHC and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in all of its press releases, publicity materials, and discussion with the media. The following packets are made available in pdf format.
