Voices for Michigan's Homeless

$15000.00 awarded on 11-15-2009

Major Grants

This project gives voice to the stories of some of Michigan's homeless population through music, song, and writing. A curriculum will be developed that meets state benchmark standards for social studies, language arts, visual arts, and music for high schoolers. Students will participate in group discussions and writing before and after the program to gauge their perceptions and learning. They will complete online discussion board entries in response to specific questions throughout the project. Students from the Detroit Public Schools Homeless Education Program are invited to participate in the online portion of the project so they may anonymously share their stories and engage in dialogue with students from the participating classrooms. Classroom visits by homelessness experts, formerly homeless individuals, and renowned composer Henry Mollicone, plus attending a performance of Mollicone's large-scale choral work, Beatitude Mass, round out this project. Mollicone will lecture on the issue of music and social justice. Writings by students will be displayed on the organization's website; the students will create a booklet; exhibits will occur with photography by Prem Mukherjee, a Michigan photographer whose work focuses on the homeless; several students will read their compositions at the Beatitude Mass; and student writings will be chosen for submission in partner-produced publications.
