Sanctuary & Deliverance in Cass County, MI

$15000.00 awarded on 11-15-2009

Major Grants

This grant creates an outdoor mural,a descriptive pamphlet, and a set of portable exhibit banners depicting an historic event - the Kentucky Raid of 1847 in Cass County. Cassopolis High School students will volunteer to assist the artist with the painting. The mural will be painted on a brick building in downtown Cassopolis; two stories high by 75 feet wide. The mural will represent the resistance of Cass County's early residents to slavery and is expected to stimulate ongoing discussions and reflection. Various scenes of the raid will be depicted on the mural, portable banners, and in the pamphlet. The pamphlet will tell the story of those people's lives impacted by the raid and pose critical thinking questions so that audiences will reflect on ethical dilemmas that confront us all. In the summer of 1847, Kentucky slave owners came to Michigan to retrieve their escaped slaves. The result of this intense conflict was a court case in Detroit, heavy fines for the implicated Quakers, and freedom for the fugitives. The Cass County legal decision triggered additional legal cases and influenced Congress in the passage of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law. An unveiling ceremony will occur upon completion of the mural as well as four community forums.
