A Year With Nick Adams: Hemingway in Mid-Michigan -- (2007) Grant Awarded: November 2007 Type of Grant: We the People/The Great Michigan Read Sponsors: West Branch Public Library Collaborators: West Branch-Rose City Schools, Imagination Association, MidMichigan Writers, Northeast Michigan Arts Council Contact: Debra Walker, 989-345-2235, debhebert@hotmail.com Award: $7,500 A series of activities that are free to the public are planned for all age groups. In winter 2008, writing contest will be conducted at the Ogemaw Heights High School focusing on rites of passage and coming of age. Contest winners will be announced at the West Branch Public Library. A poet and musician will celebrate Hemingway and northern Michigan; a local impersonator will appear as Nick Adams at the Senior Center in West Branch and three schools; the impersonator will also tell Nick Adams stories at the Ogemaw County Fair where a cabin will be recreated as a facsimile of Ken’s Diner, the setting for one of the book’s stories. A writing workshop will also be held in Standish where the instructor will take an in-depth look at Hemingway’s influence on readers and writers. The focus will be on Michigan settings and the prose style of Hemingway. Copies of Nick Adams Stories will be given away as prizes at many of these events. Students in elementary and middle school grades will be asked to create art that depicts the story they hear and the artwork will be displayed at the county fair and the West Branch Public Library.
