Shadowcatcher is the name of a 1996 composition by American composer Eric Ewazen. He used early 20th century photos of Native Americans taken by Edward S. Curtis as inspiration. Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (KSO) will develop curriculum with a teaching team from the International Baccalaureate Program at Portage Northern to explore issues of Native American history, culture, and current events. Classroom discussions with Native American, Calvin Hill, a study of Curtis’ work, viewing of a Curtis documentary, band/choir interaction with Ewazen, and a final display of students’ creative responses to the project are all components. This project is a unique and innovative one with good interaction between the arts and humanities. Ewazen will visit with Baccalaureate students throughout the week of March 19th and his concert will be presented at the KSO on March 23. A companion educational brochure will be distributed to all students for the March 23rd concert to help them understand the historical timeline in American Indian history, the making of the Curtis’ publication The North American Indian, and the composition Shadowcatcher. April 16, 2007 will be the public viewing of the students’ creative exhibition.
