Twenty student workshop sessions will be held in July of 2007, field trips to public art installations, and the creation of moveable grassroots poetry and art performances as part of the second year of Poetry and Performance. Created poetry and art will be centered on the themes of time, place, and situation and will explore the Great Migration from the south, the boom of the auto industry, Civil Rights, the 1967 rebellion, Afro-centrism, migration from Mexico, and the Detroit Hmong population. This is Phase Two of a Detroit Stories Collaborative from 2006. This 2007 project will reach out to underserved students and the Latino and Hmong populations in the Detroit area.

Living Arts Writing Institute Comes to the Stage
Inspired by Detroit's cultural diversity and richness, youth from Southwest and Northeast neighborhoods have come together to participate in dynamic program that focuses on Detroit Artists. Under the guidance of InsideOut Writers-In-Residence Stephen Johnson and Christina Perez, the youth poets traveled around the Detroit area, discovering key public art sites and witnessing the way artists have transformed the landscape of Detroit. After meeting and speaking with artists such as Tyree Guydon and Vito Valdez, the youth composed several poems that reflected their experiences. With their keen dedication to the written word, the youth are very excited to bring their observations and their artistic voices to the stage.
