City In A Strait -- (2007)

Grant Awarded: March 2007

Type of Grant: Michigan People, Michigan Places ... Our Stories, Our Lives

Sponsor: Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit

Contact: Kenneth Anderson, 313-872-6910, ken@mosaicdetroit.org

Website: www.mosaicdetroit.org

Award: $15,000

Mosaic will present a historically based theatrical work that explores the involvement of Detroit teenagers in the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. A cast of 50 young people will learn how to conduct oral history interviews with NAACP and New Detroit members, community, and family members. Staged readings will be conducted for community feedback on the script, costuming, and dance numbers. Two school matinees will be presented for grades 6-12 in the Detroit area and educators provided with a discussion guide. Two post-performance talkbacks, live and online will be available. Mosaic Youth Theatre likes to engage community. This subject matter is fertile ground for discussion, primed to occur at the right time given the upcoming 40th anniversary of the Detroit rebellion. City in a Strait is a good example of a multiple generation project. City in a Strait will be presented at the Detroit Film Theatre, Detroit Institute of Arts, on May 11 and 12 at 8 p.m., May 13 at 4 p.m., and May 18 and 19 at 8 p.m., and May 20 at 4 p.m. May 12 and 13 performances will include audience talkbacks with the performers.
