This project will support the development of educational
outreach and teacher in-service materials to accompany a 4,250
square foot
permanent ethnic history exhibition entitled, “Newcomers:
The Peopling of This Place,” slated to open in January 2006.
With this grant, the Museum’s education department and its
Community Advisory Committee will form a sub-committee of educators
and curriculum specialist to develop new:
1. curriculum-pertinent exhibition tour materials for K-12 grades;
2. teacher packets to enhance pre- and post-visit classroom learning;
3. three hands-on activity “culture kits” (customized for elementary,
middle, and high school) that can be loaned to schools as a pre-visit instructional
resource;
4. training materials for a teacher in-service workshop where educators will
be trained on how to adopt and integrate the exhibition program into their classroom
curriculum on Michigan history, cultural diversity and multiculturalism.
