Development of Educational Outreach and Teacher Training Material for Exhibition at the Public Museum of Grand Rapids -- (2004)

This project will support the development of educational outreach and teacher in-service materials to accompany a 4,250 square foot permanent ethnic history exhibition entitled, “Newcomers: The Peopling of This Place,” slated to open in January 2006. With this grant, the Museum’s education department and its Community Advisory Committee will form a sub-committee of educators and curriculum specialist to develop new:

1. curriculum-pertinent exhibition tour materials for K-12 grades;
2. teacher packets to enhance pre- and post-visit classroom learning;
3. three hands-on activity “culture kits” (customized for elementary, middle, and high school) that can be loaned to schools as a pre-visit instructional resource;
4. training materials for a teacher in-service workshop where educators will be trained on how to adopt and integrate the exhibition program into their classroom curriculum on Michigan history, cultural diversity and multiculturalism.
