The College of Communication and Fine Arts at Central Michigan University has been awarded a $15,000 Local Network Grant to host "Michigan Story Festival: StoryWheel"in Mt. Pleasant on October 17-18, 2003. This festival is a civic engagement partnership between Central Michigan University, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and the Mount Pleasant Community.

StoryWheel intends to share stories through Sound, Image, Thought and Action. Pre-festival activities, beginning in January 2003, will include storytelling workshops in K-12 schools. Isabella Bank and Trust will host a nationally known storyteller for a performance in Mount Pleasant and sponsor a workshop on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Reservation.

The two-day festival on October 17-18, 2003, will open with a mural, designed through conversations between the artist and Michigan students about their stories. The festival will include one national artist/scholar and a variety of local and regional artists in each of the Festival’s thematic units who will share stories as well as give instruction. Musicians, storytellers or oral storytellers may represent Sound. Narratives told through Image may be those of painters or quilters. Various media can represent Thought. Dance and gesture can tell a story through Action. The events will occur in a variety of venues including the restored Broadway Theater, Art Reach of Michigan, and the Park Library auditorium at CMU.
